Professor Albert De Vries from the University of Florida discusses both the short and long-term strategies for managing heat stress in dairy cattle. He discusses tips around short-term management that can be easily implemented, such as through nutrition. Albert De Vries is currently a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida. He grew up on a dairy and pig farm in the Netherlands. He went to Wageningen University where he received a B.Sc and M.Sc in Animal Science, including a qualification in agricultural economics in 1991. In 1995, he went to the US to pursue a Ph.D. in Animal Sciences at the University of Minnesota with a focus on dairy science, applied economics, operations research, and statistics. After graduating in 2001, Albert took up a role at the University of Florida. His research interests include the optimisation of culling and replacement strategies, statistical process control, the economics of reproduction and genetics, and precision dairy farming. In his advisory role, he works alongside the allied dairy industry and dairy farmers on farm financial management, and the practical application of dairy systems research.
